In January of this year, the shadow inventory of U.S. homes declined by 18% to 2.2 million units, from 2.6 million units in January 2012. Shadow inventory refers to the number of properties that are seriously delinquent, in foreclosure and held as real estate owned (REO) by mortgage servicers but not currently listed on multiple listing services.
As part of its report on shadow inventory, CoreLogic Inc. (NYSE: CLGX) notes:
The shadow inventory continued to drop at double the rate in January from prior-year levels. At this point in the recovery, we are seeing healthy reductions across much of the nation. As we move forward in 2013, we need to see more progress in Florida, New York, California, Illinois, and New Jersey which now account for almost half of the country’s remaining shadow inventory.

The U.S. Census Bureau this morning released data on new single-family home sales for February. Sales fell 4.6% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 411,000, from an upwardly revised January sales figure of 431,000.
Economists had been expecting a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 425,000. The February rate is 12.3% above the rate for February 2012. At the peak in 2005, new home sales posted a seasonally adjusted annual rate of nearly 1.4 million.
The Census Bureau also reported that the median sales price for new homes sold in January was $246,800, about 9% above the January median, and the average sales price was $313,700, or up about 9.7% from January. In January, the median sales price for a new house was $226,400 and the average sales price was $286,300.
At the end of January, the number of new homes for sale totaled 152,000, a supply of 4.4…

The Earthbound Report
Last week I wrote about some of the drivers of development described in the UN’s latest Human Development Report (HDR). There was another section that caught my eye, making a point that I often make on the blog: economic growth is not necessarily a sign of real development. It is too blunt an instrument, too abstract a goal to show how much genuine progress is being made.
“The link between growth and human development is not automatic. It needs to be forged through pro-poor policies by concurrently investing in health and education, expanding decent jobs, preventing the depletion and overexploitation of natural resources, ensuring gender balance and equitable income distribution and avoiding unnecessary displacement of communities.”

What are they looking for? It’s obvious…
There’s a simple and obvious reason why so many people are constantly checking their smart phones. Two reasons actually. Yet, I’ve not seen or read or heard anyone use either one to explain (their) behavior. But that doesn’t make my hypothesis any less debatable. On the contrary, the silence supports it. I think people are embarrassed to admit to one or the other reason. Why? Because they point to our vanity and that makes us uncomfortable.
The two reasons: 1. We don’t want to miss the girl or the boy or the party. 2. We don’t want to miss the opportunity of a lifetime.
Though based on intuition I’m 98% certain that variations on the above two reasons are why so many of us can’t stop checking our smart phones. Girls are waiting for that cute guy to call. Boys are scoping where…

German Business Confidence
Business confidence in Germany continues to sputter up and down as the economies of the countries around it disintegrate. Consumer spending within its borders and trade with countries outside the European Union have not offered enough momentum for Germans to believe that regional trouble can be overcome. The Ifo Business Climate Index fell for this month. The Institute reported:
After rising sharply last month, the Ifo Business Climate Index for German industry and trade edged downwards in March. Companies were slightly less positive about their future business outlook than in February, but assessed their current business situation almost as positively as last month. The German economy remains on track in a challenging environment thanks to strong domestic demand.
In manufacturing the business climate indicator fell. Manufacturers assessed both their current business situation and future business developments less optimistically than last month. Export expectations sank clearly, but remain positive.

Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) YouTube management bragged about reaching the one billion active user level. But it said little about its revenue contribution to the search company, because it makes almost none.
